LughaZetu Forum Rules

LughaZetu is a community for discussing, learning, sharing, and celebrating African languages and cultures. Our goal is to create a welcoming space where speakers, learners, teachers, researchers, heritage-language users, and others can participate comfortably.

By participating in the LughaZetu Forums, you agree to follow these community rules.

1. Treat Other Members With Respect

Engage with other members respectfully, even when you disagree. Personal attacks, harassment, bullying, threats, insults, or deliberately hostile behavior are not permitted.

Disagreement is welcome. Disrespect is not.

2. Respect Languages, Dialects, and Ways of Speaking

African languages often include multiple dialects, regional varieties, accents, spellings, and ways of speaking.

Do not ridicule or demean another person’s language, dialect, accent, pronunciation, vocabulary, or level of proficiency.

Members may discuss differences between varieties and standards, but those conversations should be informative and respectful rather than attempts to establish the superiority of one community or variety over another.

3. Learners Are Welcome

You do not need to speak a language perfectly to participate in LughaZetu.

Members should feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and learning from others. When correcting someone, explain the correction constructively whenever possible.

Remember that different speakers may use a language differently.

4. Keep Discussions Relevant

Post topics in the most appropriate forum whenever possible.

Language-specific discussions should generally be posted in that language’s forum. Broader discussions about African languages, cultures, multilingualism, or the LughaZetu community may be posted in the appropriate general forum.

Moderators may move discussions when another forum is more appropriate.

5. Share Knowledge Responsibly

LughaZetu encourages members to share their knowledge and experiences. When presenting information as factual, make reasonable efforts to ensure that it is accurate.

When appropriate, distinguish between established information and your own experience, interpretation, or opinion.

Members are encouraged to provide sources when making claims that would benefit from verification.

6. Respect Cultural Knowledge

Language and culture are closely connected. Some cultural knowledge, traditions, stories, expressions, or practices may have particular significance to the communities from which they come.

Discuss cultural practices respectfully and avoid presenting yourself as an authority on a community when you are not.

When another member provides important cultural context, engage with it thoughtfully.

7. Protect Privacy

Do not post another person’s private or identifying information without their permission.

This includes private contact information, addresses, telephone numbers, private correspondence, confidential documents, or other information that a person would reasonably expect to remain private.

Think carefully before sharing your own personal information in a public discussion.

8. Respect Copyright and Intellectual Property

Share material that you created yourself, have permission to share, or are otherwise legally permitted to use.

When quoting or referring to someone else’s work, provide appropriate attribution whenever possible.

Do not upload or reproduce copyrighted books, articles, course materials, recordings, images, or other substantial copyrighted works without permission.

Links to legitimate sources are welcome.

9. No Spam or Manipulative Promotion

Do not use LughaZetu primarily to advertise products, repeatedly promote websites or services, distribute unsolicited messages, manipulate engagement, or post irrelevant promotional content.

Sharing a relevant resource, project, event, publication, or opportunity may be appropriate when it genuinely contributes to the discussion.

10. Keep Content Appropriate for the Community

Do not post content that is unlawful, threatening, exploitative, deliberately deceptive, or intended primarily to harm others.

Content that promotes hatred or dehumanization of people based on characteristics such as ethnicity, nationality, race, religion, gender, disability, or similar characteristics is not appropriate for LughaZetu.

Educational, linguistic, historical, or cultural discussions of difficult subjects may be permitted when presented in appropriate context.

11. Do Not Impersonate Others

Do not pretend to be another person, organization, institution, or LughaZetu representative.

Usernames, profiles, and posts should not intentionally mislead other members about who is speaking.

12. Help Keep Discussions Productive

Avoid repeatedly posting the same content, intentionally disrupting conversations, provoking other members merely to generate conflict, or overwhelming discussions with unrelated material.

If a disagreement becomes unproductive, members are encouraged to disengage or report the issue rather than escalate it.

13. Report Problems Rather Than Escalating Them

If you encounter content that appears to violate these rules, use the available reporting tools or contact LughaZetu.

Please do not start public confrontations over moderation issues or encourage other members to target someone.

14. Moderation

LughaZetu may moderate content and accounts when necessary to protect the community and maintain productive discussions.

Depending on the circumstances, moderators may move or edit organizational elements of discussions, close discussions, remove content, issue warnings, restrict participation, or suspend or terminate accounts.

Moderation decisions may consider the context, seriousness, frequency, and impact of the conduct involved.

15. These Rules May Evolve

LughaZetu is intended to grow alongside its communities. These Forum Rules may therefore be updated as the platform develops and new community needs emerge.

Continued participation after updated rules take effect means that the updated rules apply to your future use of the forums.
