About Us

LughaZetu means our languages in Kiswahili. LughaZetu Forums is a community space created to connect people through African languages and cultures. It brings speakers, learners, teachers, researchers, heritage-language users, and anyone interested in African languages into one shared space for conversation, learning, and collaboration.

Africa is home to extraordinary linguistic diversity. Yet many African languages have limited spaces for sustained interaction online. LughaZetu seeks to help create those spaces—not only for widely taught languages, but also for regional languages, local varieties, and dialects whose communities may be much smaller online.

A Home for African Languages

Each language community has its own forum where members can ask questions, start discussions, share knowledge, explore vocabulary and expressions, discuss culture, and learn from one another.

LughaZetu recognizes that languages are diverse even within themselves. Dialects and regional varieties are an important part of how people communicate and express identity. Where appropriate, the forums therefore provide spaces for these varieties alongside broader language communities.

Our goal is not to decide which variety is “correct,” but to create opportunities for people to understand, document, discuss, and celebrate the ways languages are actually used.

More Than Language Learning

LughaZetu is not simply a language-learning website.

Languages carry histories, identities, stories, humor, traditions, knowledge, and ways of understanding the world. Discussions here may therefore extend beyond grammar and vocabulary to literature, oral traditions, music, history, names, proverbs, translation, education, technology, and everyday cultural practices.

Whether you are fluent in a language, learning your first few words, reconnecting with a heritage language, teaching others, or simply curious, there is a place for you in the conversation.

Built by the Community

LughaZetu is intended to grow with the people who use it. Members can start discussions, answer questions, share what they know, and help others learn. No single person or institution can represent the full diversity of African languages, so the knowledge and participation of speakers and communities are essential.

If you do not see your language represented, we would especially like to hear from you. As the community grows, we hope to welcome more languages and create spaces for communities that are not yet represented.

Our Community Values

We want LughaZetu to be a welcoming and respectful environment. We value linguistic diversity, mutual respect, curiosity, knowledge sharing, cultural understanding, and community participation.

Members do not need to speak a language perfectly to participate. Questions are welcome. Different perspectives are welcome. Differences in dialect, pronunciation, vocabulary, and language use should be opportunities for learning rather than reasons to diminish another person’s way of speaking.

Above all, LughaZetu is a place to use our languages, learn from one another, and help ensure that African languages have vibrant spaces in the digital world.

Karibu LughaZetu.

Our Languages. Our Voices. Our Community.
